Singapore Flyer to Fly High Once Again
SINGAPORE, 25 January 2009 – The Singapore Flyer is set to soar again this Chinese New Year after it successfully obtained official approval late tonight for a Public Entertainment Licence to start flight operations.
The authorities have approved a certification report submitted by internationally renowned technical service provider TÜV SÜD, which gave the Flyer a clean bill of health after conducting days of rigorous testing on the Flyer's newly installed backup system.
Tests were also conducted at the start of this week on the Flyer's fully repaired and enhanced primary drive system. The authorities were kept informed throughout every step of the installation, testing and certification processes.
Following a wheel stoppage on 23 December which left 173 passengers inside the capsules for around six hours, the Singapore Flyer immediately engaged a task force comprising of 11 international experts with a wide range of experience and expertise in various fields such as leisure safety, engineering, and evacuation processes to look into the cause of the wheel stoppage and recommend measures to restore and improve the wheel's operations.
The international panel of experts, which includes two specialists from TÜV SÜD, began arriving in Singapore on Christmas and has been working on the conceptualisation, installation and testing of the new backup systems since.
Mr. Florian Bollen, Chairman of Singapore Flyer, said: "We are very happy to get the wheel in operation again and we are thankful to the authorities for working closely with us every step of the way and recognising our efforts to make the Singapore Flyer the safest wheel in the world.”
"Safety has always been our top priority, and our technical team has succeeded in installing the best systems in good time and in good order. This was achieved by thinking out of the box for innovative methods and increasing manpower resources in the most time-efficient way. Our new systems have passed all tests conducted by world-renowned technical service provider TÜV SÜD and we are confident that passengers in the Singapore Flyer will now enjoy the safest and most comfortable flight," he added.
Turner & Townsend, a global construction consultancy focused on providing high-quality construction consultancy, programme and project management, cost management and management consultancy services across six continents from a network of 56 offices, led the Singapore Flyer's technical team and coordinated the installation of the two new backup systems.
Expressing his appreciation towards the Singapore Flyer's specially commissioned team of international experts, Singaporean contractors and vendors who worked together in a great team effort to conceptualise, design and install the Flyer's new backup systems, Mr. Bollen said: "Our goal has been made possible by the hard work, dedication and commitment of a highly capable international team of experts and we are extremely grateful to them and our local team for working closely with us around the clock these past few weeks to get Singapore's icon soaring again. This has been a truly remarkable Singaporean team effort with outstanding support from everybody, including the authorities."
