Singapore Flyer installs two new backup systems

Singapore, 22 January - The Singapore Flyer is on target to successfully install its new backup systems today, capping off weeks of implementation and stringent testing conducted by a specially commissioned team comprising of consultants, contractors and vendors working alongside internationally renowned technical service provider TÜV SÜD and a panel of international experts.

The team is working on the final installation of an independent secondary drive system and a Winch System on the roof deck, in separate locations from the wheel's primary drive system.

The Flyer's original primary drive system has been fully repaired and has undergone a series of tests and inspections conducted by TÜV SÜD. The Singapore Flyer has also fitted a highly sensitive fire suppression system and is monitoring it with infra-red heat detection equipment to identify any potential areas of concern before they can cause any damage.

The new independent secondary drive system, which is undergoing an extensive series of tests conducted by TÜV SÜD, will allow the Singapore Flyer to seamlessly switch from the original primary drive system, which currently possesses a backup mechanism of its own, to the secondary drive system in the event of any breakdown in the primary system.

In addition, a third system using two winches and gravity to move the wheel is also being assembled today at the roof deck, in a different location from the primary and secondary drive systems.

"We are very thankful to our capable and highly motivated team of Singaporean companies who have been doing the works in 24-hour shifts and working closely with us to get the wheel up and running as soon as possible," said Singapore Flyer Chairman Florian Bollen.

The Singapore Flyer management has also been working closely with the authorities to keep them updated on technical work progress on the wheel as well as to review and fine-tune emergency protocols.

Comfort packs comprising of essential items such as water, biscuits, glucose tablets and first aid kits will also be installed in the capsules, to ensure that passengers in every capsule will have access to emergency supplies.

Following the successful final installation of both new backup systems, the new systems will undergo a final day of tests conducted by renowned international technical service provider TÜV SÜD, before the Singapore Flyer officially applies for a licence to begin operations.

Mr. Bollen, who remains hopeful that the Flyer will be able to reopen during the Chinese New Year period, said: "While we are keen to get the wheel up and running as soon as possible, our greatest priority will always be to ensure the safety and comfort of our passengers. This is why we are putting both new systems through the most stringent tests."

"We are working closely with the authorities and we will only officially apply for the Singapore Flyer to be opened when we are fully confident that we have succeeded in our attempt to make the Singapore Flyer the safest wheel in the world."
