Statement from Mr Florian Bollen, Chairman, Singapore Flyer Pte Ltd
1. First and foremost, I would like to apologize to all our guests for the inconvenience and discomfort they had experienced in the capsules on 23 December, 2008. We have since contacted most of them either by phone or through home visits to express our apology personally.
2. With regard to our tenants, we are sorry that the stoppage has affected their business. We will waive their rentals from the day of the stoppage until the end of the year and we will meet them tomorrow to discuss how we can help them improve their business in the days ahead.
3. Safety of the flight experience is and will always be our highest priority. Singapore Flyer employed internationally known organizations to build and develop the Flyer – Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd (the wheel) and Takenaka Corporation (the property). This project was also supported and managed by independent consultants, Rider Levett Bucknall. The overall safety of the flight was also inspected and certified by TÜV. All necessary sign-offs and approvals from the relevant parties – Mitsubishi, TÜV, Rider Levett Bucknall and the authorities – were in place when the Flyer started operations and up to the point of the incident.
4. Immediately after the incident, a number of international experts and myself flew into Singapore, gathering over Christmas to form a committee conducting an investigation into the cause of the incident and to make sure that this will never happen again.
5. We are taking immediate steps to ensure that even more stringent systems are in place – the most important being an even greater ability to continue to rotate the wheel at all times via additional independent back-up mechanisms. This will be on top of the standby generator which we currently have. We will only apply for Singapore Flyer to be open again to the public once we, the experts and the authorities are entirely satisfied with the results.
6. I would also like to thank all the individuals and organizations who have shown their concern and support since the day of the incident. They include, just to name a few, the Singapore Police Force, the Singapore Civil Defence Force, the Singapore Tourism Board, Dive-Marine Services Pte Ltd, our customers, travel agents, financing partners and insurance companies, all of whom are working very closely with us, and the media, which has given us, on the whole, fair coverage of the incident.
7. Last but not the least, I wish to thank all of our staff who have, given the circumstances, held up well to assist in the evacuation of passengers and prevented anybody from being injured.
8. I would like to conclude with a big “Thank You” to our customers, who overwhelmingly chose not to cancel their pre-booked flights or events and continued to support us.
