Response to the 27 November 2011 Incident
On the evening of 27 November, there was an unfortunate incident involving a guest Mr. Tan and his 5 year old child, who was in a stroller. Our CCTV footage revealed that after successful disembarkation, Mr. Tan released the stroller, which lost control and veered off the ground, resulting in the fall of the child.
A safety net, which is installed below the wheel and can support up to a load of 300kg, ensured the safe landing of the child.
As part of our safety procedure, Singapore Flyer staff members are stationed on key areas along the boarding and disembarkation decks and in a control room to monitor our guests at all times. This ensures that the staff members on ground are able to react quickly to any emergency. As part of our safety protocol, the staff applied an emergency stop to the wheel when they witnessed this incident.
The Singapore Flyer staff on ground responded immediately to bring the child up to the ground within four minutes.The child appeared to be unhurt, but nevertheless, our staff offered to call an ambulance. The family declined the offer as the child was unharmed.
The Singapore Flyer makes every effort to ensure the safety of our guests. We have railings installed along the boarding and disembarkation decks, and staff stationed right beside the capsule entry and exit points to usher guests safely. Signs are in place in every capsule and along the boarding and disembarkation areas to remind guests: “Please hold on to the stroller at all times.” We are currently putting on trial the safe keeping of strollers for our guests during their flight. This measure allows guests to enjoy their flight without having to worry about their strollers.
Millions of guests have visited the Singapore Flyer and enjoyed a safe experience. The Singapore Flyer takes the safety of our guests very seriously and we hope that our guests will also exercise caution and responsibility to ensure their safety.
