Singapore Flyer shows appreciation to migrant workers with complimentary flights on Deepavali
Supported by Migrant Workers Centre, the Deepavali celebration gathered foreign workers and local union members to promote social integration. Singapore Flyer continues appreciation with the launch of $15 Special Migrant Workers’ Flight(Singapore – October 26, 2011) – Migrant workers ushered in Deepavali in style aboard Singapore Flyer today, as the event also served as an interactive platform for workers of all nationalities to come together, fostering harmonious co-existence.
The Singapore Flyer Deepavali Celebration event, supported by Migrant Workers Centre (MWC), marked the festive holiday with a difference. It is the first time that an iconic attraction has partnered MWC to offer complimentary flights to migrant workers.
Some 200 guests ushered the Hindu festival in with style at the world’s largest Giant Observation Wheel. 100 work-permit holders comprising foreign workers from mainly four unions – Building Construction And Timber Industries Union (BATU), Food, Drinks and Allied Workers’ Union (FDAWU), Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Employees’ Union (SMEEU) and Healthcare Services Employees’ Union (HSEU) – were treated to a complimentary 30-minute scenic flight on board Singapore Flyer, in celebration of the festival of lights.
Together, they enjoyed to a bird’s eye view of the nation’s scenic landscape that they laboured to build.
“It is our way of saying thank you and to bring our migrant workers friends some festive cheer despite being away from home. As an iconic lifestyle destination, Singapore Flyer strongly believes in showing our appreciation to the workforce who plays an important part in further developing Singapore, into what it is today. Prior to their scenic flights, our migrant workers friends will also enter into the Journey of Dreams interactive gallery, as they learn more of Singapore, their second home,” said Jeff Tan, Singapore Flyer’s Director of Sales and Marketing.
Guest-of-Honour at the event and Executive Secretary of the Building Construction and Timber Industries’ Union (BATU) Zainal Sapari also lent his support at the event. “We thank Singapore Flyer for giving these foreign workers the opportunity to enjoy the sights of our nation whom they have worked hard to build. On this festive holiday, some of them will miss out on celebrations taking place back home so the trip on the Flyer will give them the chance to relax and have some fun with their friends and fellow workers. As a union, we strive to provide better welfare for all our workers, regardless of nationality. Events such as these reaffirm the Labour Movement’s all-inclusive vision, where working people of all collars, ages and nationalities can work, live and play together in Singapore.”
The event also provided MWC the opportunity to encourage workers who are in distress to approach the Centre for assistance.
